ESSEC IRENE ASIA: a platform for exchange on negotiation between Asia and Europe

Increasing trade between Asia and Europe makes mutual understanding of culture, values, interests and negotiation styles essential: a new "silk road". ESSEC IRENE, the leading research and teaching centre on negotiation and conflict management in Europe, wishes to contribute to a better mutual understanding, building on its European roots and ESSEC's growing presence in Asia, for the exchange of ideas and better mutual understanding in negotiation, mediation and conflict management.

Official launch in March 2011


8 March 2011 marks the official launch of ESSEC IRENE ASIA at the InterContinental Singapore. On this occasion, Prof. Tommy Koh, Ambassador-At-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore, was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony and shared his negotiation experience with the audience in a keynote speech entitled "Eight lessons in negotiation". Prof. Aurélien Colson facilitated a question and answer session with the audience.


A panel of prestigious speakers (Patrick Cherrier, CEO of Essilor Asia-Pacific; François Guibert, EVP & President of STMicroelectronics Greater China & South Asia Region; James Chadam, Partner & Managing Director, Strategy ASEAN, Accenture; Ta-Wei Chao, Executive Director of ESSEC IRENE ASIA and Chi-Ying Cheng, Professor at Singapore Management University) then exchanged ideas on the theme of "Business Negotiation and Conflict Management in the Age of Globalization" during a debate facilitated by Prof. Christian Koenig, Director of the ESSEC IRENE ASIA. Christian Koenig, Director of the ESSEC Asian Center. A cocktail party closed this launching ceremony and allowed the numerous audience to continue to exchange in a friendly atmosphere.


The ESSEC IRENE ASIA opening ceremony, attended by more than 200 people, was one of the ESSEC Asian Center's greatest successes. Distinguished guests such as Ambassador Olivier Caron (French Ambassador to Singapore), Ambassador Marc Ungeheuer (Head of EU Delegation in Singapore), Ambassador Federico Palomera Guez (Spanish Ambassador to Singapore), Ambassador Nguyen Quoc Khanh (Deputy Executive Director of the Asia-Europe Foundation), etc. were among the audience.


BIOS

Philippe Le Corre is a senior research fellow and a visiting professor at ESSEC IRENE where he leads the Asia Program. He is also a research fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and a research associate at the John K. Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard. His career spans academia, think-tanks, government and the private sector. As former senior adviser and East Asia policy analyst to the French defense minister, he also worked as a scholar with the Brookings Institution and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, two of Washington DC's most respected think-tanks. Philippe Le Corre started his career as a foreign correspondent based in Asia for almost a decade and travelled extensively across the region. He is the author of five books and various monographs and book chapters on Asian affairs.


Ta-Wei CHAO is a Senior Fellow at ESSEC IRENÉ (the Institute for Research and Teaching on Negotiation). He was the Executive Director of ESSEC IRENE ASIA (Asia Branch of ESSEC IRENE). He is also an Adjunct Professor at the National University of Singapore, Adjunct Expert Professor at the National Taiwan University and has been a visiting professor at Zhejiang University for the past 10 years.

He has also worked in the higher education sector in China, where he led major turnaround projects. Prior to the above positions, he was a Manager in the consulting field at Accenture in Taipei.


After a Bachelor's degree in Management at the University of Warwick, Odile joined ESSEC's Grande Ecole program in September 2022.  

Passionate about international relations and Asia, Odile assists in the development of the IRENE ASIA program alongside Professor Philippe Le Corre. 

As an international student, Odile acts as a bridge between international students and IRENE to involve ESSEC students in all initiatives of the Asia program.
